Let’s start with a little bit of football statistics today: Which East African country has the most football clubs compared to its population?
Rwanda = 1 club per 616,857 inhabitants
(20 football clubs per 12,337,138 inhabitants)
…and which East African country has the least football clubs compared to its population?
Tanzania = 1 club per 1,504,216 inhabitants
(33 football clubs per 49,639,138 inhabitants)
How about the other three East African countries?
Kenya = 1 club per 750,168 inhabitants
(60 football clubs per 45,010,056 inhabitants)
Burundi = 1 club per 1,485,133 inhabitants
(7 football clubs per 10,395,931 inhabitants)
Uganda = 1 club per 1,496,621 inhabitants
(24 football clubs per 35,918,915 inhabitants)
So, if you have read so far and didn’t fall asleep because of such an overload of boring football statistics, what do you say:
Which one is YOUR favourite football team?
When will you bet on them?

The Citizen conducted an interview with Mr. Tarimba Abbas, SportPesa’s Director of Administration, in Dar es Salaam, asking him to tell more about SportPesa’s journey in Tanzania, since they entered the country in 2015, and went live in May 2017.
For those who don’t know: SportPesa comes from Kenya, with impressive expansion plans (currently rolling out across Africa and Europe).
Mr. Abbas explains many aspects of SportPesa’s business activities and social responsibility, the teams SportPesa is associated with (sponsoring Young Africans, the Simba Sports Club, or Singida United for instance)
In Kenya, SportPesa sponsors not only football (Kenyan Premier League) but also rugby, in the UK, they have partnerships with teams such as Everton, Hull City, Arsenal and Southampton. Their Corporate Social Responsibility is clearly football development – as Mr. Abbas states: “we would like to grow with the game”. (They regularly bring over English trainers to train the Tanzanian coaches, for example.)
To the question “What challenges are associated with betting in Tanzania?”, Mr. Abbas mentions a few analogies connected to Tanzanian Gaming Tax (and how to make taxation on gaming more friendly to the operators and the gaming public), such as the UK practice (where winnings are tax-free), or the United States (where your losses can be offset from your winnings)
SportPesa’s plans for the future are just at the beginning – there is so much more to do to improve sports betting in Tanzania – to which we wish SportPesa all the best!
Great interview, worth watching! (and it takes only 3 minutes)
Have you ever bet with SportPesa Tanzania? or do you still prefer MeridianBet.co.tz?

The Lucky M-Bet Winner of 125 Million
Victor Deonice Byarugaba can call himself a lucky guy, twice: first, he won 125 million with M-Bet (as the first Tanzanian ever), and second, he won this enormous sum before the gaming tax in Tanzania will eventually go up – which is not-so-good news to all future lucky winners.
Congratulations, Victor!
Check out other Tanzanian winners who made it big time!
